We are deeply invested in our identities, but how do we even begin to understand who we are outside of the colonial context? Black and Indigenous identities are largely constructed by the colonial regime, as are sexual identities. We are framed against the white, cis het normal. We imagine people as either civilized or uncivilized based on how close they are, or are not. to that ideal.

So how do we move past that?

By having very difficult conversations.
